Which MOT Class is my van in?

To help MOT testing stations apply the right checks to your van, vehicles are divided up into 6 categories, including Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, Class 4, Class 5 and Class 7. Most vans are either:

Class 4 – If the van has a maximum gross weight of up to 3,000kg, which can include motorhomes
Class 7 – If the van has a maximum gross weight of over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg

Does my van need an MOT?

The best way to check if your van needs an MOT is to visit www.gov.uk/check-mot-status. But, in general, your van will need an MOT if it’s over 3 years old, or over 1 year old if it’s used as a taxi, ambulance or minibus etc.

What is a van MOT test?

A van MOT test is the same as an MOT test for other vehicles, where various safety features, including the brakes, steering, suspension, tyres and lights etc., are checked to make sure the vehicle is roadworthy. A van MOT at the specified time (usually once a year unless the van is under 3 years old) is a legal requirement, plus, driving without a valid MOT will put you and other road users in danger, and invalidate your insurance.

Which parts does a van MOT test cover?

Your van MOT test will cover many of the parts covered in a car MOT test, but there will be key areas our MOT tester will look at due to the way a commercial van is used. Some of the parts our MOT tester will pay careful attention to include:

Tyres – Van tyres generally take more of a ‘bashing’ than tyres on non-commercial vehicles, due to the extra mileage, the extra weight carried, and the potentially rougher terrain the van is driven on.
Windscreen – Due to the extra mileage and particularly motorway driving, added to site visits, a van's windscreen is more likely to suffer from chips and cracks and will be thoroughly examined by our MOT tester.
Lights – Just like with any other vehicle, your van’s headlights, taillights, brake lights and fog lights will also be something our MOT tester pays careful attention to, so make sure your bulbs are working.
